The cover picture shows fruits that contain a lot of glucose. One of glucose's metabolic pathways is the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP). In cells, the importance of the PPP is to convert glucose into NADPH and pentose phosphates, which are precursors for the synthesis of ribonucleotides. Only two ketopentose phosphates, namely, ribulose-5-phsophate (Ru5P) and xylulose-5-phosphate (Xu5P), are involved in the PPP. In the past, the synthesis of Ru5P and Xu5P relied only on multi-enzymatic synthesis. A short and efficient chemical synthesis is now available; through a new synthetic methodology, carbonyl translocation, these two ketopentoses phosphates and two parent ketopentoses could be easily produced. Details are discussed in the Full Paper by W.-C. Wei and C.-C. Chang on page 3033 ff (DOI: 10.1002/ejoc.201601639).
