Chemical synthesis of ketopentose phosphates

The cover picture shows fruits contain lots of glucose. One of glucose metabolic pathway is Pentose Phosphate Pathway (PPP). In cells, the importance of PPP is to convert glucose into NADPH and pentose phosphates, which are precursors for synthesis of ribonucleotides. Only two ketopentose phosphates, ribulose-5-phsophate (Ru5P) and xylulose-5-phosphate (Xu5P), involved in PPP. In the past, synthesis of Ru5P and Xu5P relied only on multi-enzymatic synthesis. A short and efficient chemical synthesis is now available. Through a new synthetic methodology, carbonyl translocation, these two ketopentoses phosphates and two parent ketopentoses could be easily produced. Details are discussed in the articles by W.-C. Wei and C.-C. Chang
